I have decided to experiment a bit with a more "realistic"
use of color in my paintings. I made several other changes
to the original drawing for "Plateau Wish." With respect to
color -- I wanted to tone down my use of violet in
the background plateau. Often, in previous work, I have
used color too strongly. Sepia color was added to
accomplish this to better represent what one might see in a
distant landscape with its grey to blue-violet tone. In
contrast to my wanting to better represent colors in distant
mountains, I tried to more accurately choose stronger
"sandstone" colors for the foreground spire. Raw sienna
seemed appropriate for this.
The moon was reworked in this piece as well. Originally, I
had the "arms" of the crescent pointing to the left rather
than to the UPPER left as they now appear. I felt the
reorientation of the crescent was more appropriate for
the feeling I was trying to convey in the "wish" itself.
When we wish for things, we often look "up." If one were to
draw an imaginary line through the moon now, it would
appropriately match the direction of our thoughts: upward
and deeper into the imagination rather than horizontally and
closer to home. The arms of the moon are also "open" which
seems to more accurately describe the hope in our wish.
